STUDY BACKGROUND
The Johnson County Gateway: I-435/I-35/K-10 interchange is one of the most congested interchanges in the state. The economic vitality of the region relies on the continuity and efficiency of the transportation system. Projected traffic growth, however, threatens the future ability of the interchanges to provide the kind of safe and timely travel that best serves the transportation and economic development needs of the region and the state.
That is why the Kansas Department of Transportation has completed the Interchange Concept Study which identified safety and traffic improvements in this area.
The study developed a preferred improvement concept to move traffic more safely and efficiently through the area. The improvements will be phased in over time through prioritized construction projects coordinated with the adjacent I-435 and US 69 interchange.
To meet local, regional and statewide needs, the study's project team looked to the public for their questions and feedback regarding the interchanges. The study team reached out to interested stakeholders in a variety of ways, including a project blog, onsite and online public meetings, online surveys, focus groups, community and public official presentations, and an advisory group.
The final report for the 32-month study was completed in early 2011.
